Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, did not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry said that she was nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry back to California, where theater jobs were available. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017 she had her own recurring part on The ABC drama about politics Scandal starring her father. In addition, she played the younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - which is a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The character was picked via auditions the fact that she had a deep association with it.
